JoJo Fekwa - Storyteller Sunday

Storyteller Sunday is a weekly campaign that highlights the people of the world and allows them to tell their story to all who will listen. Each story is unique to the individual(s) and carries a perspective that can only be seen through the eyes of experience. This week meet:

JoJo Fekwa / Artist / Cameroon

Back when we first started Storyteller Sunday, this was our original intent, to showcase stories by individuals who's lives were shaped around the lessons that they've learned throughout their lives. Jojo is that story. If you've been up and down 14th St this summer, chances are you've seen the painted van & artwork stretching nearly a block long. The charismatic painter catches your attention with his open and inviting workspace but keeps it with his passion for his craft. Moving this, cutting that, selling this & creating that; bystanders get to watch as he achieves his goal of sharing his love for art with the world. "It just happened", as Jojo explained how he got into art. As the story goes, one day when he was younger, he realized he could draw which is where art became his passion. Fekwa grew up in Cameroon, a place where schooling is... harder, from what he told us. He learned 4 world languages which he still speaks (French, Spanish, Italian & English), went on to build a political science background but still couldn't shake the passion for his craft. Eleven years ago, he came to Miami through Foundation for Democracy to participate in an art show, moved to DC for the politics and has been wowing customers with his pieces since. If you get a chance to catch him before he makes his way back to Cameroon for a bit of a vacation from DC stop by to witness it for yourself. I'm sure you'll notice a few happy customers leaving with a piece Jojo made for them on the spot as you walk up.
