Converse: Finding a Line at the Kennedy Center
Last week, Converse paired up with the good people over at The Kennedy Center to present 'Finding a Line: Skateboarding, Music & Media', a celebration of skateboarding and the culture surrounding it. For the week-long event, the Kennedy Center built a bowl, ramp and mini street course for skaters to do what it is that they do. From the live music to the crowd in the bleachers to a few skate legends (Steve Alba legendary bowl skater) coming through in support, the event stayed pretty true to the culture and also gave skaters a new place to come together and let loose on the boards in which they find solace.
I hope to see more events like this in the coming months with DC's arts culture seeming to be at a boiling point. I've talked to a few people around the city and from the way things are shaping up, DC is on the verge of a cultural renaissance, something that is very exciting for those of us involved in creative fields. For so long, it felt as if we were an isolated culture. Rappers got little-to-no recognition on a national scale, visual artists appeared to be few and far between, and there was a lack of artistic events being held to bring attention to those creatives. These days we've built a community among ourselves, all pushing and fighting for the same recognition, exciting times in the District.
