James J - Storyteller Sunday

Good evening and Storyteller Sunday is back with it's regularly scheduled programming. Due to a slight change of pace this August, Storytellers have been moved to a biweekly occurrence instead of every week Like they once were.

This week I briefly met up with James who is currently a curator for: #JustGoShoot & #MakePortraitsNotWar. I met James at the Toki installation a couple weeks ago through sharing a love for photography and in that moment I could feel how much excitement he had just for life in general so I knew he would be a great subject for a Storyteller. This week when I met with him, that impression upheld it's truth. He couldn't stay for long but the underlining theme of our conversation was perspective, as you would expect from photographers. "The stories that we tell ourselves are what limit is the most", as James told me is the blow that struck me the deepest. That is one of those quotes that people hang superimposed over photos in their bathrooms, extremely deep but also very true. "The universe gives us gifts and we say that we don't deserve that or it makes us uncomfortable so we don't pursue it".

The somber truth of these statements is that it happens all the time. There are so many skilled and talented indiviuals blessed with beautiful gifts but because society says this or our families say that, we ignore them. We ignore our truth, a truth that is not up for interpretation or critique of anyone else. Our gifts are for us and the choice to follow them or accept them is completely up to us.
