DABS Day 2017

DABS Day 2017

If you've been in the city, you've noticed his name plastered just about everywhere. DABS, though I never had the pleasure of meeting him, was what we would consider a living legend. To be loved & cherished by so many people throughout the city is a gift, one that many people unfortunately miss out on. Within the writing community he was cherished and his name will continue to live on.

DABS day is a day dedicated to remembering his name in art, a day where some of the best writers in the city get together to celebrate his legacy. With live music, good food and tons of support, the 2nd annual DABS day celebration was another success but not without conflict.

And not to be cliche but it played out just as you would expect it to, if you've ever seen hating ass security before. You could hear the shaking of spray cans, the DJ was just starting to spin some trap music and the energy of that alley on this windy Saturday morning was just starting to elevate. The grill was on its way out, beautiful women were arriving by the car load and some of the most amazing tributes were already on their way up. But of course Top Flight had to show his face and flex his little ego. Security stops the show and not once, not twice but three times tries to put an end to this momentous celebration. We all knew he had no real reason to show up when he spoke the words, "It would have been fine if you just asked me". Excuse my language for the under-aged followers but anybody could've spotted the need for that punk ass nigga needing his ego stroked. But again, this day was about something greater. So we listened to his directions and proceeded to paint where we knew we were allowed to. But that didn't stop him from sending both the Fire Department & the DCPD to attempt to fully end the block party. I guess when you're doing something positive, negativity will always try and shut you down.

At the end of the day, the celebration was about DABS' legacy and continuing to celebrate the way he would want. Rest in Paint to a legend. As long as these guys remember his name, DABS will forever be seen along these DC streets.
