Mask Off
Percocet. Molly-Percocets.
We, as people, have a tendency to interpret what we see from others and assume that our view is the truth. The old saying, "Perception is not reality", has since been forgotten. We praise the image of these celebrities, these idols that we have created to be beyond human but all we know of them, is the image they choose to deliver us. Even political figures and diplomats, we assume that because of their position, their actions should be perfection but that is never the case. When did we stop looking at each other as humans, for how long have we not seen each other as equal?
We rely so much on perception that even in our daily walk, we avoid being ourselves to prevent others from thinking less of us. It is through this that we feel secure; we find comfort in hiding and compartmentalizing our true personality. And why? All to avoid others perceptions of us, as if that truly matters. It is this reason that being yourself has become taboo. It is this process that has created robots of society (saving this topic for another post). It is this false representation of ourselves that have created social monsters like Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Why can't we just be ourselves?
The other night I got invited to The Anniversary of the National Day of the Republic of Mauritius by the homie, Chef Gio. As short of a time that I have been on this earth, I can honestly say that I have never been to a diplomatic event. So, needless today, I was pretty geeked to have the opportunity. As always, I ignored the request to NOT bring my camera and made sure I packed it. Stepping into this room, with diplomats and their assistants representing countries from all over the world, the one thing I quickly noticed is that everyone just wanted to be seen as themselves. These diplomats and politicians spend so much time up-keeping an image for their respective jurisdictions, that when they let loose, that perception that they hold dear is no longer needed to gain acceptance. In the usual DC creative circles, the conversation quickly goes from "Hello" to "What do you do?" but what I noticed here is that no one cared to ask. It's understood when you are in the presence of power that everyone around is somebody, what is desired from people at that point is, "Who are you" -not in terms of profession but in terms of character. Deep down, we truly want to find respect and be respected for our character. Taking it back to Kanye & Kim, the second they do something outside of our acceptance of their character, the moment we loose interest. It is this example that shows us what is really important. We have no need to pretend amongst each other, create an image of ourselves so that people will 'Like' us. All we truly need is to remove the mask that we believe is required, and stay true to ourselves.
